DIY Christmas

Retailers get upwards of half of their annual revenue in the next few months from Christmas. A frugal home-made Christmas could have a big impact on businesses who love your obsession with Christmas.

Don't go into debt this Christmas. Instead, make and repurpose stuff for some or all of your gifts. Be serious about keeping your money out of the corporate coffers. Here are the rules for this blog post.

Pledge to make at least one gift for Christmas. Ideally make gifts for everyone. If you're ultimately pathetic at making things find a friend and pay them to make something for you for someone else.

Nerds 2.01

Nerds 2.0.1: A Brief History of the Internet came out in 1998 written and hosted by Mark Stephens under the pseudonym Robert X. Cringely and produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting for PBS.
Nerds 2.0.1 documents the development of ARPANET, the Internet, the World Wide Web and the dot-com bubble of the mid- and late-1990s. It was broadcast just as companies like Excite and Netscape were getting to their zenith. Then the dot-com bubble burst.

Depicted, Old White Dudes

The manifesto of Occupy Wall Street is long on problems and short on solutions. Our last podcast talks about the Occupy Everything movement.

Publication is to Quality as Bacon is to Jupiter

The city of Victoria should have the motto, “the buddy system rules.” There are layers of unofficial and official associations. It’s little surprise that when it comes to government their support for the arts, that the buddy system comes into full bloom. Fixtures in the community advise the city and help to build its systems and rules. Those become criteria for everything from how late you can run an event, to who gets arts funding, to who can be considered “legitimate.” The anointed ascend, the unwashed masses are grumpy and marginalized.

This came to the forefront when local poet, performer and artist, Missie Peters wrote a letter to the City of Victoria to voice her concerns.

That's (NOT) Entertainment!

We fight the battle of the bulge. My family does and our society does. To combat obesity and physical fitness, my daughter has PE (physical education) and DPA (daily physical activity). Obviously, School District #61 wants to pay lip service to health and fitness-- that is, until someone dangles money in front of them.

The Next Project

I'm going to keep some of my Halloween 2011 costum under wraps... for now.
But here's what I need to pull it off (do you have some of this stuff?)

  • Einstein wig ✓
  • Pickle barrel ✓
  • Plaid / tartan material, kilt or skirt ✓
  • Brass rivets
  • Suspenders
  • Couch cushion ✓
  • Panty hose ✓
  • Portable DVD player ✓
  • 10 sq. ft. of neoprene or foam-cell rubber

Geek Out : Making Molds

Since the early 1990s, I’ve been experimenting with mold making. It started back in the days when we had these miniatures from Games Workshop. The supply lines were choppy and the prices were high. We used to stay up until 1AM to phone Games Workshop and order Titans, Gargants, etc.. We thought: hey, couldn’t we make this stuff? Yes, it would be a tremendous violation of copyrights, but I wanted to field two more Gargants, dammit!

Why The Postal Service Is In Trouble

Check this out: It's taken 6 days to get from Ontario to Victoria. It's predicted to take 5 days to get from Victoria's plant to my front door. Why does this have to be handled TWICE so far in Victoria? Why can't this go on a truck now that it's in town? To be checked, it has to be handled, right?

Old Fat vs. New Fat

I usually write about what I purport to know; or I write about what I think should happen. Instead I’m going to write about a metabolic and biological mystery. Fat.
I’m fat. I lost almost all of it when I was 19. Then it started to trickle back on. By the time I was 25 I was noticeably overweight and by the time I was 30 it was back in a big way. So how does fat work?

Account Sync Sinking

I've been trying to get an expanded version of Account Sync together. I did a few changes to make it home off of the email address as opposed to the username. The place I do much of my contracting work with has a use case where the emails will be in common, but the user id numbers and the usernames will be different.

My Brand Yourself-- no wait, that doesn't make sense!
